An effective signal processing technique for high density digital magnetic recording is essential to development of a high reliable mass data storage system. A concatenated code combining a 16/17 maximum transition run code and cyclic redundancy check code is known as a system providing an excellent large performance because this system uses a maximum likelihood decoding with soft-outputs and a list decoding for erasure errors based on the differential log- likelihood information between received and error pattern sequences. In this paper, the new system using soft-outputs bidirection Viterbi decoding and list decoding for tentative errors with low reliable information symbols obtained from a bidirectional Viterbi decoder is proposed. The bit error rate performance for our system combined with several PRML systems is obtained by computer simulation and the PRML system which shows a better performance is cleared.
