Since 1979, leveling survey along the coast of Miyakejima volcanic island has been carried out by Geographical Survey Institute at intervals of about one year. On October 3 to 4, 1983, Miyakejima volcano erupted at its southwest flank. The eruption broke out along 5-km-long line of fissures. Fortunately, we got valuable vertical deformation data related with the 1983 eruption. Precise analysis of the leveling and the mareographic data has revealed that inflation prior to the eruption, deflation associated with the eruption and re-inflation after the eruption (prior to the next eruption) have occurred. Especially, it is very important for volcano eruption prediction research that the inflation prior to the eruption, that is, a precursory phenomena of eruption, has been observed at Miyakejima volcano which is considered to be difficult to observe precursory phenomena because of basaltic volcano. Centers of the inflation and the deflation that suggest a magma reservior are situated at about 1-2 km southwest of the summit crater. And the depth of the magma reservior is estimated to be about 8 km based on assumption of the spherical pressure source model (Mogi Model).
