Degradation of Polyethylene Glycol Dodecyl Ethers by a Pseudomonad Isolated from Activated Sludge

From activated sludge, we isolated an organism which utilizes penta-ethylene glycol dodecyl ether as asource of carbon and energy. In a medium containing 1,000 ppm of the surfactant as a caron source, the isolate degraded more than 90% of the surfactant after 18 to 24-hr cultivation. Several other polyethylene glycol dodecyl ethers were also degraded, but polyethylene glycol nonylphenyl ethers were not utilized by the bacterium. Cleavage of the tested surfactant molecule into hydrophobic and hydrophilic moieties was observed. The hydrophobic moiety was consumed during bacterial growth and the hydrophilic polyethylene glycol moiety accumulated in the culture broth. From taxonomical characteristics, it was considered that the isolate belongs to the genus Pseudomonas.
