Kinetic Study on the Production of Maridomycin by Streptomyces hygroscopicus : Studies on the Application of Fermentation Kinetics (IV)

A kinetic study was made on the fermentation by Streptomyces hygroscopicus AV-901 for the production of maridomycin, a macrolide antibiotic. The microorganism showed pseudo-diauxic growth depending on the consumption of different forms of phosphate such as soluble inorganic phosphate, bound inorganic phosphanic and enzyme degradable phosphate in the fermentation medium. The modified equations for the growth rate of microbial cells and the production rate of maridomycin in the fermentation were derived from the general equations previously reported by the authors. Many differences in the fermentation charcteristic values were observed between the values with a shaking flask and those with a 200-l fermentor. The maridomycin produced by the fermentor was about 40% less than that by the shaking flask. For improvement of fermentation by the fermentor, the effects of dissolved oxygen level and of mechanical damage to the microbial cells by the impeller, on the fermentation characteristic values for the growth and the product formation were kinetically analysed.
