A kinetic study was made on the fermentation for the production of butirosin A by a butirosin A-resistant mutant BA-44R derived from Bacillus vitellinus Z-1159. A butirosin A-sensitive mutant BA-44S which was a natural revertant of strain BA-44R was observed to exist in the fermented broth.Based on the theory of fermentation kinetics which we reported on previously, general equations for growth rate and production rate in a mixed culture of a product-resistant strain and a product-sensitive strain are presented by introducting a newly defined inhibition rate constant, K_i.The effects of fermentation conditions on microbial cell growth and product formation were estimated theoretically by substituting the fermentation characteristic values of the two strains into the general equations. The results of the estimation were successfully applied to the increase of butirosin A production.
