Kinetic study was made on the fermentation of a mutant strain, EMP-58,derived from Bacillus sp. for the production of D-ribose from D-glucose. Microbial cells autolysed immediately after death caused by the limitation of substrates for growth in the declining growth phase of the fermentation. Based on our previously reported theory of fermentation kinetics, a modified general equation for production rate in the fermentation was developed by introducing a death rate coefficient of the microbial cells. The most suitable operating conditions, especially fermentation temperature, were estimated kinetically by using the modified equation for production rate. The estimated results showed that fermentation temperature should by controlled exactly at 36.6℃ and seed cells at the exponential growth phase should be inoculated for the satisfactory production of D-ribose by the strain EMP-58.
