The optimum cocentration of phosphate for the production of maridomycin was markedly affected by the oxygen transfer condition in a shaking flask. The production of maridomycin was suppressed when the dissolved oxygen level decreased below 60 mmHg in the culture in the presence of excess phosphate, but not suppressed when it was kept above 60 mmHg by increasing the oxygen supply, even in the presence of excess phosphate. The production of maridomycin was regulated by the dissolved oxygen level affected by the phosphate concentration in the medium.
