Influence of External Orthophosphate Concentrations on Some Kinetic Properties of Activated Sludge in an Anaerobic-Aerobic System

The addition of high levels of orthophoshate (P_i) to the mixed liquor of activated sludge in a laboratory-scale batch anaerobic-aerobic system inhibited organic carbon uptake during the anaerobic phase. The degree of inhibition reached the maximum with P_i at a concentration of 3 mM and above. When the external P_i concentration was low, anaerobiosis induced the simultaneous occurrence of an increase of effluent P_i and a decrease of the total phosphorus content of sludge, as usual. The decrease in the phosphorus level of sludge was due mainly to polyphosphate (polyP) degradation. The initial presence of 3 mM P_i, however, suppressed both anaerobic P_i release and polyP degradation. These results suggest that an excess of external P_i inhibits poly P degradation and the resultant energy generation in sludge under anaerobic conditions, whereby anaerobic organic matter removal may be suppressed. The long-term operation of the anaerobic-aerobic system at high P_i-loading rates resulted in producing sludge incapable of anaerobic P_i release and aerobic enhanced P_i removal.
