Effect of Additives on Oxidatio Kinetics of Sodium Sulfite Solution

Liquid physical properties of sodium sulfite solution were changed by the addition of a polymer and a surface active agent, and the effects of these additives on the chemical absorption rate of oxygen were investigated. Sodium alginate was used as an agent for increasing viscosity, and Tween 20 for reducing surface tension. The addition of Tween 20 had no influence on oxygen absorption rate, while sodium alginate reduced the oxygen absorption rate. From the measurements of molecular diffusivity and solubility of oxygen in sodium sulfate solution containing sodium alginate, it was clarified that the reduction of oxygen absorption rate was due to a decrease in molecular diffusivity and solubility of oxygen, and that the reaction rate constant of sulfite oxidation was not influenced by the addition of sodium alginate.
