Gas Absorption Characteristics of the Tank-Type Fermentor with a Mechanical Gas Entrainer

A new tank-type fermentor capable of entraining gas from the head space of the tank was developed. It consisted of a draft tube and two impellers, one a entrainer and the other a gas disperser. Effects of operating and geometric conditions on oxygen absorption rates in this new fermentor were investigated to determine the optimum equipment geometry and to establish the operational criteria.Comparison with absorption rates in a normal aerated stirred tank demonstrated that this new fermentor has excellent power efficiency for oxygen absorption.
