On the Equivalent Thickness of a Side-Grooved Specimen

Fracture toughness tests of side-grooved specimens were carried out to investigate the equivalent thickness of a side-grooved specimen. The effects of a side groove on the stretched zone width and stable crack growth were also investigated. From the results, the equivalent thickness for the J_<IC> value was in a range between B_<e1>(=√<B・B_N>) and B_<e2>(=B-(B-B_N)^2/B). Although the thickness B_<e2> can be utilized from the viewpnint of a conservative estimation, it is reasonable to use the thickness B_<e1> which also gives good estimations for the blunting line.
