Epidermal cell culture was attempted from human skin according to a method newly devised. Epidermal cells in culture, as compared to their in vivo counterparts, are especially suitable for the observation of pigment donation, a process involving the transfer of melanosomes from the melanocyte to the keratinocyte which is vital to epidermal melanization. Close observations revealed it consisting of several stages occurring in a regular fashion. These sequences of the stages are surprisingly similar to those observed in cell cultures from the guinea pig. Finally the significance of this method in the investigation of melanin pigmentation of the skin, including the skin hypermelanosis occurring during pregnancy, was discussed.
