Cross sections and recoil ranges in ^<209>Bi(p, n)^<209>Po(T_<1/2>=103y) and ^<209>Bi(p, 2n)^<209>Po(T_<1/2>=2.92y) were obtained by counting α rays from the residual activities. The recoil ranges were found to be shorter than those expected from the full momentum transfer in the regions of the higher energy tails of the excitation functions. This fact shows that some direct mechanism must betaken into account in order to understand the (p, xn) reactions in heavy mass nuclei even at comparatively low bombarding energies.
