Effect of Hund's Rule Coupling on the Kondo Effect

In the d-electron and f-electron systems, generally, electrons tend to localize at their atornicsites. In these systems, if an atom has plural localized electrons, Htrnd's rule coupling in the atoumis important for the property of the system. We investigate the effect of Hund's rule couplingon the Kondo problem with pltrral localized electrons by using scaling theory. Following thePoorman's scaling, we give the scaling equations which describe tlae Kondo efl'ect with Hund'srule coupling. It is shown that the strong cotmpling fixed point of s-d exchange interaction is notchanged by the Hund's rule coupling. The characteristic energy TK (Kondo temperature) de-creases smoothly with increasing Htrnd's rule coupling. Even if the hybridization terms betweenconduction electrons and localized orbitals are anisotropic by a crystal field, the characteristicenergy is unique, except for the case Htrnd's rule cotrpling ,71-I : oc. There exist ferrornagneticcouplings between the localized electron and conduction electrons in the different orbital syrn-metry. However, they and Hund's rule coupling itself are irrelevant operators. Therefore, thesinglet ground state is stable against the Hund's rule coupling.
