Electronic State and Magnetic Susceptibility in Orbitally Degenerate (J=5/2)Periodic Anderson Model

• Magnetic susceptibility in a heaxzy ferta?ion system is coraaposed of the Patrli term (XP) andthe Van-Vleck terrn (XV). The latter conaes f'ronn the interband excitation, xvhere /-orbitaldegeneracy is essential. Ill tlais xvork, we study yp and ,{v in the orbitally degenerate (J :- 5/2)periodic Anderson taaodel for both the ztuetallic and insttlating cases. Tlae effect of the correlationbetxveen .f-electrons is investigated ttsing the self-corasisterat second-order perturbation theor-y.The main results are as folloxvs. (i) Sixfold degeruerate nuode[: botla XP and XV are enhanced by af'actor of' I/z (S is the renormalization constant). (ii) Nozadegenerate ?nodeJ: ouuly gv is enluancedby 178. Thus, orbital degeneracy is indispensable for the enhancement of XV. lVIoreover, orbitaldegeneracy reduces the XVilson ratio and stabilizes the nonmagnetic Ferrni liquid state.
