Magnetization Process in Antiferromagnets with a Strong Uniaxial Anisotropy Energy

The isothermal magnetization process in an Ising spin system at finite temperatures is calculated in the molecular field approximation for the purpose of discussing the process in CoCl_2・2H_2O and CoBr_2・2H_2O. It is shown that in CoBr_2・2H_2O three phase transitions may occur in the process in a range of temperatures. Conclusions drawn from the molecular field calculation are substantiated by thermodynamical arguments. The case where the anisotropy energy is small enough to allow the spin-flip transition is also discussed. In a range of the magnitude of the anisotropy energy the spin-flip transition coexists with the Ising model transitions in the process.
