The exchange-like interaction by which BCS pairs are scattered between two bandsis intensified through a process expressed by ladder diagrams. 'This intensification isreported here to be divergible in the case of two-dintensional two-band systems withelectron and hole pockets. In such systems interband polarization function has a peakfor wave number equal to the difference of the two Fermi wave numbers. This peakcan lead to the divergence of the ladder-diagram process for important wavenumbers, leading to s-wave superconductivity. An equation for T. taking account ofthis effect is derived and numerically solved. T. becomes finite and large despite largeU when the ladder-diagram process is close to or has the divergcrnce. This mechanismis argued to be substantiated in the high-7'. oxides. Competition with an SDW transi-tion is briefly discussed.
