The possibility of superconductivity in the grotnnd state of the two-dirnensional Hubbard modelwas investigated by means of the variational lVIonte Carlo naethod. With slight hole doping on the6 x 6 and 10 x 10 lattices, a clear rninimtrun was obtained on the curve of the total energy versusthe amplittrde of the d-wave gap ftrnction for large on-site Cotrloznb energies. Superconductingpair correlations were observed to be well developed. The-next-nearest-neighbor traxnsfer wasfotrnd to apprecialcly affect the minirnun'n depth.
