Optical Properties of KI Crystals Containing MnO^<2->_4 or MnO^-_4 Ions

Optical absorption, Raman scattering and effe<.?ts of uv-light irradiations have beeninvestigated for Kl crystals containing MnO: or Mn0j ions. Several absorptionbands and some vibronic structures are observed in the visible and uv regions. Ramanscattering due to internal modes of these tons is observed under laser excitation andsite symmetries of these ions are discussed. When Kl crystals containing these ions areirradiated with uv-light at LNT, two bands due to V. centers are formed at 404 and800 nm. V. centers formed in the uv-irradiated systems seem to be trapped aroundMn0: or Mn0} ions. The formation process of V. centers is explained by the ex-citation of Mn0: or Mn0j ton followed by the capture of a valence electron after acharge transfer from the ligand oxygens to the central manganese under the uv-lightexcitation.
