Formation of V_k Centers in Alkali Iodides and Bromides Containing MnO_4^- or MnO_4^<2-> Ions under UV-Light Excitation

Optical absorption spectra of Rbl, RbBr and KBr crystals containing Mn0j orMnO: ions and effects of the ur-light irradiation on these crystals have been in-vestigated. Several absorption bands and some vibronic structures are observed in thevisible and uv regions. Assignments of electronic transitions are given to these absorp-lion bands. Depending upon the formation process of Mn0: ions, absorption spec-Era due to these ions show some differences, which are interpreted by location ofanuon vacancies near MnO 'I. ions. Formation of V. centers by the zvz;-light irradiationat low temperature is confirmed in the quenched Rbl:MnO' and in the Rbl:Mn0j ,RbBr:MnO.- and KBr:Mn0.- . The L.-center formation is explained by an intra-molecular charge-transfer transition in the crystals containing Mn0j ions, and prob-ably by an excitation in the exciton-band tail in the crystals containing MnO: ions.[color center, trapped hole center, V. center, photoexcitation, permanganate, lj manganate, alkali iodide, alkali bromide, charge transfer]
