Optical Bleaching of V Centers at Liquid Nitrogen Temperature in KI Crystals Containing Excess Iodine

Optical absorption, luminescence and F.SR of F-t)'pe centers have been studied forKl crystals containing excess iodine. Colored cr)'stals were irradiated previously witlaV3 light at liquid nitrogen temperature (LNT) to convert the primary V centers intoother F-type centers. Dichroism is induced iua tlae absorption bands of the crystal ataround 420 and 800 nm by irradiation with the [1103- or [100]-polarized light. ESRspectrum of 11 equally spaced lines is detected at LN'T under a magnetic field alouag a[110] axis of the crystal. A bsorption bands, lumineseexace axad ESR limaes due to tlaesecenters disappear at 'temperatures above 110 K and original V centers recover in pureKl crystals. We conclude that V. and F. centers are generated simultaneously by theoptical bleaching of the primary V centers.
