V Bands in RbI Crystals Containing Excess Iodine

Optical properties of Rbl crystals, which were additively-colored with iodineor electrolytically-colored by the pointed-anode method, have been studied.After coloration, two bands assigned as V. and V. bands are observed at 358and 287 urn, respectively, at 77 K. Dichroism is induced in both bands at 77 Kby irradiation with the [110]- or [1004-polarized V. light. Upon irradiation withthe V. light at 68 K or at 125 K, the Vz and V. bands are bleached and a fewbands are formed simultaneously in the uv and visible regions. In addition to theproperties of the V. and V3 bands, spectral positions of the newly formed bandsare consistent with the previous results of Kl. It is concluded then that V centersintroduced into halogen-excess crystals of Rbl and Kl have the same structures.
