A close correlation has been found for 60 aqueous ions between the standard en-tropy of hydration US:(ion) and the square of the ionic Stokes radius r.(ion). Aboveall, the following relation holds for 37 ions; AS':/4nr:N=AS':./4nr..N= - 3.44 X 10 ' J K ' cm ' at 298 K. Here N is the Avogadro constant, r..twice the Stokes radius of water, and AS' the standard entropy of condensation ofwater vapor at 298 K. This relation is extended to other 23 ions by introducing aneffective ionic radius r.(Ton) in place of r,(Ton) to conserve the relationship mentionedabove. In general, there is the relation of r.(ion)=r.(ion)-F-dr. with dr.>0, to show anexpansion ir. of ionic Stokes spheres due to the participation of loosely hydratedwater in the equilibrium static state of ,153(ion).
