Optical Study of α-Fe_2O_3 under Ultrahigh Pressure

An optical measurement was made for a-Fe.0. under ultrahigh pressuregenerated by a diamond cell. Low-energy shifts of the absorptions due to 'Aj. -+'T and 'A..+'T.. transitions in 3d electrons in Fe ton were observed withlgincreasing pressure up to 300 kbar. The increase of the crystal-field splitting wasindicated from the data. A new absorption observed at higher pressure is supposedto be ascribed to the high spin-low spin transition.
