The Mechanical Study on the Low Temperature Phases of LiCsSO_4 Crystal

The low temperature phase of the ferroelastic LiCsSO_4(LCS) crystal was investigated by the thermomechanical methods and the observation of the domains using the polarizing microscope. The thermal expansion measurement showed an additional change at around 176K besides the ferroelastic transition at around 190K and strain tensor components ⋴_<12> and ⋴_<13> of LCS crystal in the ferroelastic monoclinic phase showed different behavior at around 176K. We found through the observation using the polarizing microscope that at 176K an unusual change of domain wall orientation occurs. Very characteristic behavior here is that below 176K, one of two type domain walls disappears and only one type of domain walls remains. The mechanism of the change of the wall orientation and the reduction of the number of domains are in present not understandable, but we assume that it is not a phase transition.
