Selection Rules in X-Ray Second Order Optical Processes for Rare Earths

The difference in 4f photoernission (PEST, 4f-3d X-ray ernission (XES) and 4f inverse photo-emission spectra (IPES) between the 3d core on- and off-resonances in rare earths are discussedsystenaatically on the basis of an atomic model taking into account the ftrll rnultiplet. For PESand XES the resonant process passing through tire higher-energy interrnediate state of each of3d5 /2 and 3d3 /2 absorption thresholds is shown to jcrodtnce the spectral intensity correspondingto the higher-energy multiplets not accessible in the off-resonance. For IPF,S in rare earthswith less-than-half filled 4 f shells, on the other hand, the resonant process passing through thelower-energy interrrrediate state of each of 3d57z and 3d37z thresholds is showr? to stuppress theintensity corresponding to higher-energy rnultiplets seen in the off-resonance. For the higherenergy intermediate state, the IPES intensity corresponding to even higher-energy mtrltiplets isshown to becorrte stronger. A systematic interpretation of these selection rtrles in terms of the3d-4 f exchange interaction, the 3d core spin-orbit interaction and the distribution of 4 f electronsin the initial state is attempted.
