Competition between Classical Ordered State and Quantum State in Ferromagnetic Chains Coupled by Antiferromagnetic Bonds

We study how the ferromagnetic order in the XXZ Heisenberg model on a ladder lattice isdestroyed by antiferromagnetic bonds between chains. It is found that a critical value of .7AFexists in the Ising-like Heisenberg models. Anisotropy dependence of the critical values is studiedby a diagonalization method. At the critical point, the energy gap between the ground stateand the first excited state is found to disappear in the thermodynamic limit. Below the criticalvaltre, the gap is due to the Ising-like anisotropy while it originates from the singlet pair forantiferromagnetic bonds above the critical point.
