Co Substitution Effect on the Electronic Structure of NiS Studied by X-Ray Photoemission Spectroscopy

X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) measurements of the valence band, Ni 2pcore level, Co 2p core level and S Xs, 2p core levels were carried out on the metallicstate of Ni, ,.Co,.S (0<t<0.06). The main peak of the valence baxtd spectra shiftstoward lower binding energy (A.) with increasing v (d7'./ d v = - 2.6 f 0.4 eV / mol).This behavior is different from those reported on vacancy introduction or on the Sesubstitution in Niu .S or NiSu ,Se, (dffs/d,v=0; d7Fn/d,v;0). The Ni 2P3/2 corelevel peak also shifts toward lower E. (dE.7c1v= -1.8;0.6eV/mol), while nochange in the S 2s or 2p core level peak is observed. We propose the possibility thatthe hybridization between the Co d'L and the Ni d'L peaks near the E, where Ldenotes a ligand hole, leads to the modification of the electronic state of Ni sites inNi. ,.Co,S.XPS, nonmetal-metal transition, charge transfer, Ni, , Co,S
