The primary step of firefly D-( -)-luciferin (Ln)<:hemiluminescence in the 0.-bub-bled dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) dissolving Z-Bu0K was investigated by the ESRrapid-freezing technique. It was discovered that superoxide anion radical (O.- ) isgenerated and is stably present in the DMSO solution of Z-BuO]< at room temperatureand is consumed on mixing with the solution contai?aing Ln to produce light emission. Thus it was concluded that 07 is clearly related to the primary step of Inchemiluminescence.
