A mathematical method to analyze the decay of a dissipative dynamical system isdeveloped, which is to study the dissipative structure of the corresponding system. The method is applied to the study of stable equilibria in magnetohydrodynamic(MHD) systems. Special sets of MHD equilibria are characterized as attractors ofMHD systems, and they are shown to be classified into four classes, which cover widerange of experimentally observed MHD equilibria.
