Forced Volume Magnetostriction of Disordered Ni-Mn Alloys

The temperature depeztdextce of the forced volume magnetostriction c3co/dH ofdisordered Ni. ,Mll. alloys (c<0,25) has beext measured by strain gauge tech-nique. The values of dco/c1H for Ni amtd 4.8 at3Mn change the sign at T/T.=O.7auad 0.9, respectively, but those for the other Ni-Mn are positive at all tempera-Lures. The pressure coefficients of maguaetic momettt at 0 K din o,?/clp estimatedthermodynamically are all negative and become larger with increasimag c. Thevalues of d In a.,./dp are approximately proportional to the high field susceptibi[-ity 75. at 4.2 K. The estimated pressure derivatives of the Curie temperature dT./dp also chaztge the sigut to negative with decreasing T., and agree well with thedirect measuremem'nt. These results for the pressure effects are discussed qualita-tively with the competitioxt between the #-band widexaiuag and the s-d transfer inititterant electron model.
