Experimetal Studies of CO_2 Gas-Dynamic Laser by Means of a Shock Tube

Various fundamental properties of the CO_2 gas-dynamic laser are investigated in detail by means of a conventional shock tube with 70mm inner diameter and nearly 9m in length. The effect of the catalyzergas composition on the output power is studied, and the optimum content of helium gas is found to be about 70∼80% and that of water vapor is about 2%. The dependence on the stagnation temperature (T_<st>) and pressure (P_<st>) is also examined. The optimum value of T_<st> for the mixture of 0.2CO_2+0.8N_2 and for 0.1CO_2+0.2N_2+0.7He is about 2400K and 1700K, respectively. The output power increases with increasing P_<st>, and tends to saturate at the P_<st>-value of 4 to 6 atmospheric pressure. The optimum distance from the nozzle throat is 9±2cm. The maximum value of the peak output power is nealy 20W and the power density is about 3W/cm^3.
