Several targets, covering a wide range of mass number, were bombarded with the 57 MeV proton beam from the INS (Tokyo) synchro-cycrotron. Energy spectra of emitted charged particles and their angular dependence were measured. In this article (Part I), the experimental method and the results concerning emitted protons are presented. The observed proton spectra were structureless compared with those for deuterons which will be reported in Part II. However, the continuum proton spectra do have a pronounced angular dependence, which may be explained by the mechanism of direct collision of neucleons inside the nucleus and/or at the diffused rim of the nucleus. Excitation energies were determined for the few spectral peaks which were strongly excited at forward scattering angles. These peaks may be concerned with some collective excitations.
