A Classification of Nucleon Resonances through Pattern Recognition

With the expectation that a sizable difference of the "nternal" structure of composite hadrons should phenomenologically display itself through a break of their "external"quantities, a search is made for such a possible break, that is meaningful from pattern recognition theory of information science, in six sorts of available external quantities of twenty-five nucleon resonances (mass, isospin, spin, parity, decay width and π-N partial width). If we regard the break found in this way as directly corresponding to a classification of nucleon resonances, then in the best solution fifteen nucleon resonances belong to Class I (members of the N_α, N_γ and Δ_δ trajectories, N(1680, 5/2^-) and N(1983, 7/2^+) newly found through a recent π-N phase shift analysis, N(1550, 1/2^-) and Δ(1640, 1/2^-)) while ten belong to Class II (the Roper resonance N(1470, 1/2^+), etc. ). A few physical remarks on the classification are given.
