ammonia volatilization following the application of urea fertilizer to a Bangkok Clay (Typic Tropaquepts) was measured directly in a greenhouse experiment by using the enclosure technique with air turbulence. It was found that the broadcasting application of urea was associated with high concentrations of urea and ammoniacal N in the floodwater as well as a rise in the floodwater pH and total alkalinity. Deep placement of urea induced a similar pattern but to a lower extent. Broadcasting of urea amended with 2% phenyl phosphorodiamedate (PPD) on a weight basis delayed urea hydrolysis, decreased the accumulation of ammoniacal N, and delayed the development of high pH and total alkalinity in the floodwater. Significantly lower NH_3 losses were observed in the case of deep placement of urea in the reduced soil layer than with broadcasting on the soil surface. The application of urea with PPD was found to be effective in reducing the NH_3 volatilization losses. The results indicated that the maximum loss of ammonia was small (less than 3% of the amount of applied urea) during the 28-day period after the broadcasting of urea which suggests that NH_3 volatilization may not be a significant mechanism for the loss in this study.
