Since asparagine in the rice leaves has been regarded as an indication of nitrogen nutritional status of rice plants by some of the previous research workers, "Nitrate test" being inapplicable for this aquatic plant, the present experiment was planned to investigate the mechanism of asparagine appearance and the role of various factors, particularly light intensities and nitrogen levels, towards its appearance. On the basis of the findings of this experiment it is quite definite that increasing duration of darkness is mostly responsible for the appearance of asparagine. However, in general, high amount of asparagine appears in the case of high nitrogen level than the low nitrogen level. Regarding the mechanism of asparagine appearance, the experiment has thrown light that soil nitrogen is the precursor of asparagine in the leaves. At the same time, asparagine appearance is closely related to the protein decomposition in the early panicle formation stage. Nitrogen compounds are decomposed and redistributed as low molecular compounds and appear in the sampled sap. Asparagine test may be used in geneaal for the determination of top-dressing requirement.
