A kinetic study of the assimilation of ^<15>N-labelled ammonium in rice seedling roots

The pathway of ammonium nitrogen assimilation, its incorporation into amino acids and synthesis of protein was studied with the aid of nitrogen-15. The analysis of ^<15>N involves the use of optical emission spectrometry. Kinetic analysis of nitrogen assimilation by the roots indicates that glutamine and glutamic acid were the primary products of ammonium assimilation. Possibly some of the amino acids, such as aspartic acid and alanine received their amino nitrogen directly from free ammonia in the roots. Amino groups were transformed into other amino acids from these primary products, especially from glutamic acid through trans-amination.
