Selenium in Amorphous Iron (hydr)oxide-Applied Soil as Affected by Air-Drying and pH

A laboratory experiment was conducted to investigate the stability of immobilized Se in a synthetic amorphous iron (hydr)oxide-applied soils in relation to air-drying and pH. The levels of soil contamination with Se(IV) and Se(VI), either alone or in combination, ranged from 10.9 to 155.6 mg Se kg^-1. Se in amorphous iron (hydr)oxide-applied soil was found to be stable upon air-drying. No discernible changes in the amount of soluble Se between the leachates of wet and air-dried applied soils were found. The pH showed a strong predominance on the stability of immobilized Se in amorphous iron (hydr)oxide-applied soil. At low pH values up to 5.3, the amount of soluble Se was low (<10 μg L^-1), regardless of the contamination levels. Beyond pH 5.3, both Se(IV) and Se(VI) were gradually desorbed. Se(IV) in the applied soil was more stable than Se(VI) at similar pH values. Though Se(IV) contamination was 2 to 2.5 times higher than that of Se(VI), only 7% of Se(IV) was desorbed at a pH value around 8, while 75% of Se(VI) was desorbed at a similar pH value, indicating that their mechanistic pathways for interaction with amorphous iron (hydr)oxide surface was very different, assuming that Se(IV) formed inner-sphere surface complex and Se(VI) formed outer-sphere surface complex with amorphous iron (hydr)oxide. These results suggest that Se in amorphous iron (hydr)oxide-applied soil is environmentally stable if the applied soil is maintained under acidic conditions upon air-drying.
