Pion-Nucleon Backward Scattering at High Energies and Pion Structure

By using the impulse approximation under the assumption that the pion can be regarded as a composite system of a nucleon and an antinucleon, the pion-nucleon scattering amplitudes at high energies are written down in terms of the nucleon-nucleon scattering amplitude, the nucleon-antinucleon scattering amplitude and the nucleon-antinucleon bound state wave function. Some backward peaks in pion-nucleon scattering are naturally expected to come from the forward peaks in nucleon-nucleon and nucleon-antinucleon elastic scattering through the exchange or rearrangement effect. This type of backward peak is called the "exchange backward peak". There the probability of finding a nucleon-antinucleon pair in the pion state becomes the only free parameter to be adjusted so as to fit the theoretical curves to the experimental plots. With appropriate values of the probability it is shown that the experimental angular distribution of the π^±p elastic backward cross sections at about 4 GeV/c (of the incident pion momentum in the laboratory system) are well reproduced by the theoretical "exchange backward peak" with the right order of magnitude and the correct forms-including the difference between the backward behavior of π^+p and π^-p scattering. The angular distribution in pion-nucleon scattering at about 8 GeV/c are also obtained with the right order of magnitude, although the statistics of the experiments is too unsatisfactory to compare with the theoretical one in the backward region. Finally it is pointed out that the sharp backward peaks of the π^±p elastic scattering should not originate in the simple "exchange backward peak" but in the backward behavior of the nucleon-antinucleon amplitude coming from the no-pair intermediate states and of the protonneutron scattering coming from the charge exchange effect. The sharp forward peak of π^-p charge exchange scattering may also be due to the same source. In the Appendix it is shown that the sharp backward peaks cannot be understood by the correction terms from the u-channel resonances unless we use special form factors with a broad range and a small magnitude.
