A Possible Scheme of Elementary Particle Structure : Trion Model with Integral Quantum Numbers and Additional Force-Field

By analogy with the nuclear shell model, a possible scheme for the structure of elementary particles is presented, in which the baryon is a composite system of three fundamental particles bound by a sort of additional "force-field" like a Hartree field. It is assumed that the fundamental particles-the isodoublet ξ and η and the isosinglet ζ-form a unitary triplet t and the additional "force-field" a unitary scalar U_B, and therefore that the baryon is of the type ~ (ttt)U_B. The symmetry properties to be expected in this scheme are just those obtained in the Zweig-Gell-Mann scheme. In contrast with the latter scheme, however, it is shown that one can assign integral values of the baryon number, the hypercharge and the electric charge to the above fundamental particles ξ, η and ζ, if the additional "force-field" is assumed to be responsible for some part of the quantum numbers. There are many ways to assign integral quantum numbers to the triplet and the "force-field" as follows : [table] Possible schemes of the meson structure are also discussed. As for the lepton structure, it is pointed out that the baryon-lepton symmetry may be interpreted even in this scheme. Finally, some speculative discussion is given on the additional "force-field". The present scheme may be called the "shell model" type of elementary particle structure because of the additional "force-field", while the conventional ones may be of the "triton" type because the baryon is assumed to be bound by some interparticle force. The differences between them may be observed through the electromagnetic form factor of the nucleon and other phenomena.
