Commensurate-Incommensurate Transition in Sine-Gordon Fields

The thermodynamics of the one and two dimensional sine-Gordon fields which include the natural misfit μ are investigated by transforming into a Coulomb gas system. For the one dimensional field we try two formulations ; one is in terms of T-μ ensemble and the other is in terms of T-Φ ensemble, where Φ is the total phase difference. We get the free energy of the same form for the Coulomb gas system as that obtained by the transfer matrix technique. It is shown that in the T-Φ ensemble we cannot take the thermodynamic limit in obtaining the interaction energy of a Coulomb gas system. For the two dimensional field we discuss the second order commensurate-incommensurate phase transition in terms of the T-μ ensemble at a particular temperature. Two correlation functions which are related to the displacement and the density of the atoms are calculated explicitly.
