A two-channel optical model is presented to describe elastic scattering and coherent production in high energy hadron-nucleus collisions. The eikonal approximation based on the present formalism will prepare a theoretical framework in which effective absorptions inside target nucleus can be more reduced than predictions of the conventional Glauber theory, by taking nuclear fluctuations and a possible virtuality of colliding particles into account. After some simplifications to show characteristic features of the model, the present theory gives useful formulas for the elastic scattering and the coherent production, just with the same forms as given by Glauber and by Kolbig and Margolis but with only modification of an additional factor to reduce the single particle total cross section. Finally it is shown that experimental results can be fairly well reproduced by the present theory.
