Grain Growth by Inhomogeneous Quenching : Numerical Simulation in three Dimensions : Condensed Matter and Statistical Physics

The change in grain morphology in ordering dynamics is studied by three dimensional numerical simulation under the dynamic external condition that the quench front is shifting slowly. Three typical grain morphologies are found, i.e., compact, elongated and single-ordered large grain(s). These are the same as in two dimensions, but the transition in three dimensions is sharper than in two dimensions. This may be attributed to the dimensional property of the boundary between ordering and disordered phases.
