The Structure of the Velocity Field in a Phase-Separating Turbulent Fluid Mixture

The velocity correlation function in phase-separating fluid mixtures is discussed.We find several properties of this correlation function.When the Reynolds number is not large enough, the Fourier component of the velocity correlation function V_k(t)is scaled as R(t)~d-1〓(kR(t), Λ(t)), where d is the spatial dimensionality, k is the wave number, and R(t)is a time-dependent length scale.Here Λ(t)is a time-dependent dimensionless quantity associated with the Reynolds number.As the Reynolds number becomes sufficiently large, 〓 approaches a universal function 〓(kR, 0).At large wave numbers, 〓(x, Λ)behaves as x~-d-4 if Λ≠0, whereas 〓(x, 0)has a longer tail determined by the turbulent fluid motion.A plausible function for 〓(x, Λ)is qualitatively obtained, and it is compared with numerical simulations in two and three dimensions.
