A possible explanation of the characteristic features of large angle elastic proton-proton scattering at high energies is suggested. The effect of the diffraction scattering of a cloud pion of the target proton from the incident proton is calculated; this gives the main contribution in the region II where the scattering angle ranges from 20° to 70°.
