Toson Shimazaki traveled abroad twice and brought out several journals -France dayori (Letters from France, 1924), Etoranze (Strangers, 1922), Umi e (TO the sea, 1918) and other pieces. They have miscellaneous contents as follows ; records on two voyages and his days in Paris, sentiments for his dead father, thoughts about Japan, and introductions of climates and natures in foreign countries. These essays do not necessarily have coherence and unity as a record of his travels, but it is clear that he got interested in the culture gap between Japan and the foreign, mainly European countries. His interests are Japan, the Japanese, and Japanese culture by contrast with the west, though his comments on civilization and culture lack consistency and are not comprehensive. There are several thinkable reasons for this, but I chiefly present the following. The spirits of modern age in Japan must have taken away the wide and objective view as an observer from him. The more he tried to be part of the spirit of modern age in Japan, the more strongly he took historical consciousness by being carried away by the rushing torrent of modernization in Japan. That characterizes his essays on travels most and his concern about his father's age is another aspect of the same. Especially the theme of journals which he wrote after he came home was the spirit of the modern age in Japan. In my view, what Toson learned from his experience abroad is not the meaning of the modernization in the west but the process of the modernization in Japan. Toson's historical view on the Meiji Restoration, which was expressed in his novel Yoake mae (Before the Down), also originated from this. In this essay I tried to make clear the meaning of his travels abroad from these limited points of view.
