Kafu Nagai's famous literary work Hiyorigeta (LOW clogs) is generally considered to be one of common guide-books of Tokyo. This may be partly attributed to another title on the first page, Tokyo Sansakuki (Records of Rambling about Tokyo). In my view, this book is not symply a record of his strolling about various places of scenic and fistoric interest, but it is also a description based on the passage of time, with many different records of strolling or other travels. Apart from its appearance, there is little value in this work as one of mere records. Because he concentrates his attention on describing the objects of his stroll, this piece is similiar to some essays on the 'view.' However, Kafu's deeper intention is to show how the 'sights' in Tokyo relate to Japanese modern civilization, in which his nostalgia for the 'lost view' is expressed. If this book is to be so appreciated, the 'places' or 'sights' chosen by the auther have such important meanings. Why does he emphasize the 'spots,' such as the lanes, vacant lots, slopes, or cliffs? What is the aim of his criticism of the modernization of Tokyo, of its urbanization, or of its westernization? I present my some views on the above questions, beyond its framework as a 'literary work,' from the standpoint of an essay on urbanization and other problems of Tokyo.
