Kafu Nagai wrote a novel Fukagawa no uta (A Song of Fukagawa) just after his coming back to Japan. This work portrays the hecherishedan atmosphere of Edo remaining at Fukagawa, but it did not sketch the landscapes of the town or its outskirs. Other than this novel, Nagai's many works include two essays written later, "Motohachiman (The Original Place of Hachiman Shrine) " and "Fukagawa no Sanpo (Rambling the Lanes of Fukagawa)", which describe his nostalgia for the Koto district (the east of the Sumida River), especially for Fukagawa. The "landscapes" are therefore not real streets, but illusions in his mind. We can also see his unrealistic and emotionalized world in the novel Yume no Onna (A Dreamy Woman) published before his going abroad. In this eaasy, I give my views on the emotion and meaning of urban space, investigating how the "landscapes" of Fukagawa or Honjo in fluenced Kafu's literature.
