'Labyrinth' is used as the word which means a 'maze' dotted in the Mediter-ranean regions, not to speak of the Greek myths. Whether Kafu's novel Bokutou kidan (Romance from East of the Sumida) is a work depicting a Japanese labyrinthian space positively or not, its scene is Tamanoi around 1935 (the 10th year of Shouwa). Tamanoi was a newly developed land having 'mases' where there were bustling streets of unlicenced prostitution. He described this land as a 'labyrithe' in French and said that it had been taken on 'an aspect of a labyrinth.' Different from Honjou or Hukagawa, the streets of Tamanoi must have seemed a newly opened land to him, because he had strolled about 'the slums in the old destrict.' As he had entered Oishi hospital to be treated for beriberi after April in the year 1931, he frequebtly took a stoll as far as the neighborhoods of Senjyu, Horikiri, Terashima and Arakawa. Kafu's experience in this period produced his records of ramblongs, including Housuiro (a drain)' and the like, that is, his series of 'short pieces.' Bokutou kidan is also such an example. Tamanoi, the scene of his novel, suffered badly the damage of the Pacific war, but there are a few vestiges of this town at the present day. We can still find many narrow paths, though paved, similar to the lost lanes there and imagine them ourselves.
