Kosei Ando notes in Ginza Saiken (A Guide to Ginza) that Tokyo had central Quarters after the Kanto earthquake. Probably two quarters were probably Ginza, in downtown and Shinzyuku, in uptown. Since the latter half of the 1920's, a newly peopled district has spread to the northwest in the suburbs of Tokyo, But the fact, as Ando points out, that Ginza has been holding the limelight of urban life in Japan has not changed. In this essay, I will talk about Kafu's views on Tokyo of those days, seaching for a characteristic of his novel Tsuyu no Atosaki (Before and After a Rainy Season) and its literary meaning. In my opinion, this work is not merely a genre novel, although the ways of living Tokyo at the turning point are depicted. It is an 'urban novel' which shows the urban space of modernizing Tokyo, focusing on a hostess named Kimie working at Ginza around the year 1930. Its description itself both materiality and objectivity.
